Hindeloopen is a small Hanseatic town on the IJsselmeer with its own marina and a relaxed atmosphere. Renting a sloop for a full day costs between 180 and 280 euros per group during the season, with fuel and deposit often included. Sloops up to fifteen horsepower can be operated without a boating licence, as long as the skipper is sixteen or older.
From the harbour you can head out onto the IJsselmeer towards Workum or Stavoren, or take the Frisian inland waterways via the Johan Frisokanaal. Along the way you'll spot old warehouses, painted facades and wide open skies. You can moor at Workum, Molkwerum or Stavoren, usually for a harbour fee of a few euros. Count on eight hours of net sailing time, bring provisions for the journey and check the wind before you head out. Booking ahead in July and August is strongly recommended.
