The Frisian lakes make up the most popular sailing area in the Netherlands, with interconnected stretches of water, narrow canals and short crossings. No boating licence is required for an open sailboat up to seven metres; larger or faster boats require Klein Vaarbewijs I. With almost every rental company you can book a skipper for roughly 175 to 275 euros per day.
A day charter typically runs from 9:00 to 18:00 and costs 175 to 425 euros per boat, depending on type and season. Departure harbours include Sneek, Heeg, Lemmer and Stavoren. From Heeg, the Heegermeer is directly accessible, with onward routes to the Sneekermeer or the Slotermeer. The season runs from April to October, with the most reliable winds in May, June and September. On warm summer days it can get busy around the more well-known junctions.

Choose a departure point: Sneek for a wide range of options, Heeg for classic boats and direct access, Lemmer for a passage through to the IJsselmeer.
Book a valk, polyvalk, schouw or small cabin yacht one to three weeks in advance, longer ahead in July and August.
On arrival, get a briefing on hoisting the sails, the centreboard, VHF channel 18 and the local bridge opening times.
Sail a loop around the Heegermeer or Sneekermeer, with room for tacking practice on open water.
Moor in a village harbour such as Heeg, Woudsend or Sloten for a lunch break by the water.
