The Loosdrechtse Plassen are a classic Dutch sailing area with space, shelter and plenty of rental options. For a day charter the choice is wide: an open Valk or Polyvalk for 150 to 250 euros per day, an open cabin boat up to 6 metres for 200 to 350 euros, or a larger cabin yacht with skipper for around 500 euros. A boat licence is not required for most rental boats on the lakes, as they are shorter than 15 metres and do not exceed 20 km per hour.
A typical day starts around ten o'clock with a briefing at the jetty, followed by a trip to the islands between the third and fifth lake. There you can swim or have lunch. The wind often picks up in the afternoon, so the return leg is usually the most sporty part. When wind exceeds force 5, rental operators recommend a smaller boat or an instructor on board.

Suggestions
- Book midweek for lower rates and quieter water around the islands.
- Choose a Polyvalk as a beginner's boat; a 16m2 or BM is more fun if you already know how to sail.
- Ask the rental operator for a wind chart and a safe route in easterly winds.
- Combine with lunch at a harbour restaurant on the Veendijk if you don't feel like cooking.
- Bear in mind the crowds during regatta weekends in June and September.
Variations
