This afternoon takes children aged six to twelve on an expedition close to home. They hunt for beetles and ladybirds, put together a leaf book, collect conkers and stones, and listen with their eyes closed to everything that rustles and chirps. Every step is small enough for a spontaneous fifteen minutes and rich enough to fill an entire afternoon.
Grab a small bucket or an old ice-cream tub and go on a mini safari in the garden. Look for beetles, ladybirds and woodlice, then draw your favourite find.
Suggestion: After taking a good look, put the creatures back exactly where you found them.Collect different leaves from around the neighbourhood and turn them into a leaf book. Compare colours, veins and shapes, then figure out which tree each one came from.
Search for natural treasures like conkers, acorns or a beautiful stone. Together, make up a story about how that treasure ended up here.
Close your eyes and listen to all the sounds around you for one minute. Write down what you hear, from birds to rustling leaves.
