Voordat je het vliegtuig ook maar in de buurt van de startbaan brengt, liggen er een handvol getallen op tafel die bepalen of die vlucht überhaupt mag plaatsvinden. Massa en zwaartepunt, brandstof tot op de minuut berekend, en een startbaanlengte die op een warme middag met twee passagiers ineens een stuk krap kan uitvallen. De meeste mensen ontdekken dat juist dat laatste, het opzoeken van een prestatiegrafiek voor een grasbaan van 600 meter op een zomerse dag, voor het eerst duidelijk maakt hoe smal de marge soms is.
Dit deel van de theorie voelt droog totdat je begrijpt wat elk getal vertegenwoordigt. Een verkeerd zwaartepunt verschuift de hele balans van het toestel, te weinig brandstof geeft geen waarschuwing op het moment dat je die nog kunt gebruiken. Door de berekeningen keer op keer met de hand te maken, voor jouw trainingstoestel, met echte waarden, worden de tabellen en grafieken iets wat je leest in plaats van iets wat je overslaat.
