A better eye 1 of 8: Light before camera

A better eye 1 of 8: Light before camera

20 min Calm

Start

Photography is looking at light. Twenty minutes at home to see where it comes from, how hard it is and what it does to a face.

Sit by a window with an apple or a cup. Turn it slowly and watch where the shadow falls.

Suggestion: Hard light from a small source, soft light from a big window.

Photograph the object with the window behind you, beside you, and behind the object.

Suggestion: Three photos, same object. Look at the mood of each.

Hang a white sheet or paper next to the object as a reflector. Photograph again.

Suggestion: This is how portrait light is made.

Turn all lamps off except one. Photograph a hand in that light.

Suggestion: One source, one direction. Notice the drama.

Pick the photo you like most and write one sentence why.

Suggestion: Words about light make you see it faster next time.
