Half a day on the Frisian lakes is plenty for a three to four hour loop, ideal if you want to get out early in the morning or late in the afternoon. No boating licence is required below 20 km/h, and most rental companies hand you a route card with recommended loops. The area is easy to navigate and well suited to beginners.
From Heeg you can do a half-day loop around the Heegermeer with a detour to Idzegea. From Earnewald you circle through the Alde Feanen, a national park where you wind between reed beds and marsh islands. Keep your speed low in that nature reserve and respect the bird sanctuary zones; at wind force 4 or above the open side of the Pikmeer gets choppy, so stick closer to the shore.

Book a day ahead with a rental company in Heeg or Earnewald, and ask about half-day rates (morning until 13:00 or afternoon from 14:00).
Go through the briefing at the dock, and specifically ask about the no-wake zones in the Alde Feanen.
Leave the harbour at a gentle pace, keep to the right in the channel, and wave back to the bridge keepers.
Do a loop of about an hour and a half across the Heegermeer or through the Alde Feanen, and choose the sheltered eastern side when it is windy.
Moor at a jetty tucked into the reed beds, and enjoy the silence and the hunting herons.
Head back to the harbour with half an hour to spare before the agreed return time.

- With westerly or south-westerly winds, Heeg is a more sheltered starting point than Sneek.
