Leipzig has a dense café scene between the Hauptbahnhof and Cospudener See that has shifted considerably in recent years. Anyone looking for a proper break rarely heads to the Markt, but instead to the southern neighbourhoods. The Karl-Liebknecht-Straße, known as Karli for short, connects Südvorstadt and Connewitz and is the main artery for roasteries, small bakeries and cafés with their own production. Those who want to go even deeper can take the tram to Plagwitz, where old factory halls now house workshops and coffee shops.
A good café crawl plans two to three stops and leaves room between venues for a stroll along the Karl-Heine-Kanal or through Clara-Zetkin-Park. Most places are open Tuesday through Sunday, with Monday often being a rest day. Cash is worth bringing, as smaller spots don't always accept cards. Cake is often only replenished fresh until the early afternoon.
