Strasbourg is more than its winstubs and Christmas market. A quiet specialty coffee scene has taken root in Krutenau, around Place Saint-Étienne, and all the way into Petite France. The counters are narrow, the baristas serious, and the proximity to Germany and Switzerland has brought an early culture of well-roasted beans to the city. The half-timbered facades hide some very good spots.
The route is walkable in half a day. Three stops in nearby neighborhoods, two extraction methods tasted per location, and breaks along the Ill to let the palate breathe. Morning is the best time, when the counters are not yet full and the baristas have time to talk through the beans. A notebook helps to jot down favorite origins before heading home with a bag under your arm and a new mental map of the city center.
