Reading a vessel at night or in poor visibility. Navigation lights, what a tug or a ferry shows, and the shapes shown by day.
Op het water lees je andere vaartuigen af zoals je een zin leest: het begint met één detail en pas daarna vormt zich een beeld. Wie 's avonds op een drukke rivier vaart, ziet een witte lamp boven een rode, of misschien twee witte lampen achter elkaar, en moet in een paar seconden bepalen wat er nadert en vanuit welke hoek. Het verschil tussen een duwstel en een sleep, of tussen een veerboot en een vrij varend schip, zit in combinaties van lichten die elk een vaste betekenis dragen, verankerd in internationale en binnenvaartregels.
Overdag neemt een zwarte bol aan de voormast die rol over. Een kegel met de punt naar beneden, een cilinder, een ankerkogel: elk van deze vormen vertelt omstanders iets over wat een schip op dat moment doet of niet kan doen. Wie de logica achter die signalen begrijpt, hoeft ze niet uit het hoofd te leren. Ze worden vanzelf herkenbaar, op het moment dat het er toe doet.
