Een buitenboordmotor start je niet zomaar op. Wie voor het eerst de koelwateruitstroom controleert, het kill-cord bevestigt en daarna de motor laat warm draaien, merkt dat dit ritme na een paar keer vanzelf gaat zitten. Minder vanzelfsprekend is wat er daarna gebeurt: zodra je achteruit vaart, trekt de achtersteven opzij, terwijl je verwacht dat het schip gewoon recht achteruit gaat. Dat propellerwalk-effect overrompelt bijna iedereen de eerste keer in een jachthaven.
Dit playbook legt uit waarom motoren en vaargedrag zich zo anders gedragen dan een auto. Het verschil tussen een tweetakt en viertakt, het draaipunt van het schip bij het sturen met een roer, en waarom diesel en benzine absoluut niet door elkaar mogen: het zijn geen losse weetjes, maar een samenhangend beeld van hoe een vaartuig werkelijk reageert. Dat beeld maakt het examen behapbaar en de eerste tocht op eigen kracht een stuk rustiger.
