Een boot verlaat de steiger sneller dan je denkt, zeker als het water rustig ligt en de motor al draait. Toch begint veiligheid aan wal: controleren of het reddingsvest onder de kuip klopt, of de brandblusser niet verlopen is, of de gasafsluiter dicht zit voordat je de motor start. Wie dat ritueel kent, doet het in drie minuten. Wie het niet kent, vaart weg met een open vraag.
De meeste mensen ontdekken dat de theorie achter "man overboord" logischer zit dan verwacht, maar dat het in paniek toch anders voelt. Schreeuwen, wijzen, gooien, draaien: de volgorde bestaat omdat elke stap de volgende mogelijk maakt.
