Stavoren is the oldest city in Friesland and sits at the southern tip of the IJsselmeer. Renting a sloep for a full day usually costs between 180 and 280 euros per group, fuel included for a normal day on the water. For sloeps up to fifteen horsepower no boating licence is required, though you will need a valid ID and a short briefing from the rental company.
From the Stavoren marina you have two directions to choose from: the IJsselmeer heading towards Hindeloopen and Workum, or southward along the Mokkebank and the Frisian coast. Along the way you will spot herons, grebes, and in summer cormorants perched on pier heads. You can moor at Laaxum, Hindeloopen, or along a free grassy bank in sheltered inland water. Count on eight hours on the water, plan for coffee and lunch along the route, and keep at least an hour spare for the return trip.
