Espresso, filter or French press: get to know your coffee makers
1 h€ 100 Calm
Four ways to brew coffee, each with its own flavour and character. Discover which one suits you before you choose.
Every coffee maker brews coffee in its own way, and you can taste the difference in the cup. An espresso machine forces water through finely ground beans at high pressure, while a classic drip coffee maker lets hot water slowly trickle through a filter. Two very different results from the same bean.
In this playbook you put the four best-known methods side by side: the espresso machine, the drip coffee maker, the single-serve capsule machine and the French press. You'll learn how each one works and what makes it great, so you'll know exactly which method suits your taste and pace.
Espresso machine: water is pushed through a fine grind at high pressure. Rich and full-bodied, though the flavour depends heavily on the machine and the grind size.
Drip coffee maker: hot water trickles over ground coffee in a filter. Simple and quick for brewing multiple cups at once.
Single-serve machine: capsules with pre-measured coffee, water is pressed through them. Convenient, though the cost per cup is higher.
French press: mix ground coffee with hot water, wait a few minutes, then slowly press the plunger down. Strong and full of flavour.
Suggestion: Use coarsely ground coffee to keep the sediment in your cup to a minimum.Related playbooks
