Setting up an aquarium is a small project with a big payoff: a lively slice of underwater world right in your own home. It takes a bit of preparation, because the fish you choose determine almost everything, from the size of the tank to the layout and the water. Do your homework upfront and the rest will practically take care of itself.
In this playbook you go from preparation to your first fish. You choose between fresh and salt water, set up the tank with gravel and plants, treat the water, and add the fish gradually. After that, regular maintenance keeps the aquarium healthy, for you and for the fish.

First decide what you want: freshwater or saltwater, and which fish. Research their needs before you buy anything.
Choose a tank that fits the number and size of your fish. Place it on a sturdy, flat surface out of direct sunlight, and set it up with gravel, plants, and decoration.
Fill it with water and use a water conditioner to remove chlorine. Measure the pH and temperature to match the needs of your fish.
Add the fish gradually so you don't shock them, and feed sparingly with the right food.
Suggestion: Ideally let the tank settle for a few days before the first fish go in.Keep it healthy: change the water regularly, keep algae under control, and test the water parameters.
