Better golf 2 of 8: Putting on the carpet

15 min Calm

Start

The putter is the club you use most. Ten minutes of short putts at home, every evening, does more for your score than a bucket of drivers.

Put a coin two metres away on the carpet. Roll ten balls over it with a smooth pendulum stroke, shoulders only.

Suggestion: Count how many roll over the coin. Write it down.

Now three metres. Ten balls. Focus on the ball starting on line, not on distance.

Suggestion: Look at the coin, not the ball, for the last three putts.

Gate drill: two tees or pens just wider than the putter head. Ten strokes through the gate.

Suggestion: Touching the gate means the face was open or closed.

Distance drill: roll a ball to the far wall so it just touches. Ten times.

Suggestion: Speed matters more than line beyond three metres.

Note your coin score. Next time, beat it.

Suggestion: This is the habit that lowers scores.
