Better golf 5 of 8: Course management on paper

Groundpublished

Take strokes off without touching a club. Plan your home course hole by hole: where to miss, when to lay up, which tee shot is not the driver.

Print or draw the scorecard of your home course. For each hole write your usual score and the usual reason it goes wrong.

Suggestion: Be honest. Water on 7 is not bad luck if it happens every week.

For every par 4 and 5, decide the club off the tee that keeps you in play, even if it is not the longest.

Suggestion: A 7 iron in the fairway beats a driver in the trees.

Mark the safe side of every green: where a miss still leaves an easy chip.

Suggestion: Aim there when the pin is tucked.

Pick two holes where you will always lay up short of trouble.

Suggestion: Bogey is fine. Doubles kill the round.

Fold the card into your bag. Play the next round with it.

Suggestion: Compare scores after.
